Division achievements for 2007/2008

image

At the end of the year, all of the achievements for members and clubs are totted up. Many of these are recognisable under the Toastmasters Distinguished Club Programme. I will explain about this in a later post but essentially it is one key way that you, as a member, can tell that your club is running well. It rewards for the club for things you would hope your club would be doing - getting people educated, bringing in new members, ensuring club officers know their roles and making sure the membership dues are collected in a timely fashion. There are 3 levels of achievement under the plan:

Presidents Distinguished

Select Distinguished

Distinguished

Not all clubs are able to successfully reach the Distinguished Club Plan. This is why I wanted to acknowledge the amazing achievements of Division B last year under this plan. The results are as follows:

Division B Division Governor Dick Dixon Presidents Distinguished Division
Area 6 Area Governor Dave Sellman Presidents Distinguished Area
Area 29 Area Governor Dorothea Stuart Select Distinguished Area
Area 31 Area Governor Dave Brooks Presidents Distinguished Area
Area 34 Area Governor Freddie Daniells Presidents Distinguished Area
Berkeley Sq Club President Christine Fent Distinguished Club
Broadgate Club President Christopher Hall Distinguished Club
Canary Wharf Club President Clive Broadbent Presidents Distinguished Club
Citi Criers Club President Maria-Jesus Rojo Select Distinguished Club
Early Bird Club President Hilary Briggs Distinguished Club
Excalibur Club President Yvonne Masset Select Distinguished Club
Grosvenor Sq Club President Carol West Presidents Distinguished Club
Holborn Club President Ratan Lele Presidents Distinguished Club
London Athenians Club President Hakan Akbas Presidents Distinguished Club
London Cardinals Club President Tory Craddock Presidents Distinguished Club
London Communicators Club President Armando Armellini Presidents Distinguished Club
London Corinthians Club President Kim Horner Presidents Distinguished Club
London Olympians Club President Joann Walsh Distinguished Club
Riverside Communicators Club President Sonia Aste Presidents Distinguished Club
Speakeasy @ CreditSuisse Club President Andreas Lundin Presidents Distinguished Club
Trojans Club President David Lee Distinguished Club
Tube Talk Club President David Bennett Presidents Distinguished Club
West London Club President Kimra Argus Select Distinguished Club
WIBF – Canary Wharf Club President Deepa Srinivas Presidents Distinguished Club
WIBY - City Club President Nicola Bishop Select Distinguished Club

I think we can safely say that Division B was very well run in 2007/8!

This is a testament to the quality of leadership at each of the clubs last year. Likewise, our Division and Areas did a top job last year too. I am sure that I echo everyone’s thoughts in saying thank you to Dick Dixon, last year's Division Governor, for making it such a pleasure and success last year. A special word should also be said to his Assistant Division Governors, Iain Duthie and Yvonne Masset. Thank you all.

PS If I have made any factual errors here just let me know and I will correct them.

Crazy English Summer!

FD-ImageOver the coming year I would like to talk to the readers of The London Speaker about what the I am doing as Div B Guv. I sense many people don’t know what we do on the Division Committee. Hopefully this will give you a better sense. Think of this as the first of our occasional fireside chats! So pour yourself a G&T and lets go!

My first month is over and what a month it has been! I didn’t realise how much is involved! Dick Dixon, the Immediate Past Division Governor, had told me that it would be a breeze. More like a storm, tornado and hurricane wrapped into one I would say!

It kicked off in early June with the new committee heading to Stansted for District Officer Training. Covering the marketing, public relations and funding of Toastmasters, the structure of Toastmasters and the Distinguished Club Plan, I think we all left suitably bamboozled! I got home and met my wife in the local bar to cure my buzzing head – what had I let myself in for??

It was was great though to meet the new District 71 (UK & Ireland) team. Our new District Governor, Gary Sanders, and his team are highly motivated to make 2008/9 a year to remember.

One thing discussed was the new slogan/mantra/theme for the UK and Ireland. It is:

the courage to make a difference…

I am not normally a fan of these things. However, I must congratulate Gary on this one. For me it strikes just the right chord for the coming year. I have already been using it liberally at club meetings. If we all have that courage then we will prosper as individuals and as an organisation.

It was also great to meet my team for the first time. For those who have not caught up with them, they are as follows:

Assistant Division Governor – Training and Education – Dave Sellman

Assistant Division Governor – Marketing – Dorothea Stuart

Area 6 Governor – Carol West

Area 29 Governor – Himanshu Vora

Area 31 Governor – Jane Campbell

Area 33 Governor – Hilary Briggs

Area 34 Governor – Liz Hobbs

Please ask them any questions you may have – they are here to help.

Later in the month, we had a handover meeting with last years committee. And then at 00.00am on July 1st, I was suddenly Division Governor – yikes! No doubt Dick Dixon was sniggering somewhere!

First up was the Hilary Briggs and Bob Ferguson Evaluation workshop on July 2nd. Hosted by Division B, the event was a great success - over 70 people attended giving such positive feedback. Just this week I received an email from Sandra Lawes, Division G Governor. She told me that a member from her Division had just done their first evaluation and it had been a brilliant success. He put it down to having attended this workshop. Thank you to Hilary and Bob for helping us all in this way.

We hope to do more of these workshops during the year - keep an eye out for them here on TLS.

On July 7th, we held our first Division Committee meeting. The focus was to organise the programme for the upcoming Club Officer Training sessions.

These were held on 14th, 22nd and 30th July respectively.

Over 150 people were trained over the three sessions. Indeed, in two venues we had so many people we really struggled to fit them all in! Each club sent, on average, over five members of the committee.

These events are always difficult to pitch. I am therefore particularly grateful to Hilary Briggs for knocking our ideas into an ultimately successful schedule.

The feedback was very encouraging.  Many officers are taking on their roles for the first time. Giving time for them to interact with others in the same role really seemed to work.

I would also like to say thank you to Dave Brooks/Credit Suisse, Liz Hobbs/Metronet Rail and Eleanor Smith/Marsh for the loan of their offices. We have no budget to hold Club Officer Training sessions so rely on the largesse of members, clubs and their employers to hold these sessions. Ultimately all this comes out of someone’s budget (Club or corporate) somewhere. Please bear this in mind if you attend future sessions. Without this help these events would need to be charged for.

Finally, I have visited a number of clubs this month. I have taken roles at club meetings at Broadgate Speakers, Corinthians, NZICA Bank Speakers and our new pre-charter club Careerbuilders. From what I have seen so far our clubs look in great shape.

I must also mention the dedication of Amy Jackson, new President at Corinthians (seemingly known to the cognoscenti as ‘Corries’). Just two weeks after giving birth, she has taken over as President. As I arrived, I was greeted by dad and baby Emily sitting outside the meeting room while mum ran the meeting inside. As soon as the break started, Amy dashed out of the door to make sure everything was ok – it was very funny to see! With this the kind of dedication there isn’t too much to worry about is there?

(PS Amy – if dad is going to sit outside the door at meetings why not give him a role to do? Perhaps a meet and greet role??! ;) Do not show him this!!)

Overall, it has been a tiring but tiptop month. There has been so much to organise that I haven’t had a chance to do a few of the things that I would like. But these will come for sure. In some ways this has been a building month, putting down foundations. I look forward to sharing with you some of the details in a months time, if not before.

Broadgate Speakers at Speakers Corner, Hyde Park

image Last year Broadgate Speakers led a posse of speakers (what does one call a group of speakers? A gaggle?) to Speakers Corner. They hosted a table topics session and picnic. Everyone had a great time - you can read about it here:

http://thelondonspeaker.typepad.com/weblog/2007/09/dealing-with-he.html

Following that success, Broadgate Speakers are organizing their 2008 Table Topics afternoon at Speakers Corner in Hyde Park. It is at 1.45pm for a 2pm start on Sunday 10th August. And all Toastmasters are invited!

To up the level from last year, the event will this year consist of 4 table topics masters, covering 4 very different themes. These themes are as follows:

1) The Icebreaker table topics. Easy Table topics to get people used to speaking in an unfamiliar environment.

2) Humourous table topics. To get people into the spirit of the event

3) Current Affairs and Political Debate table topics. The session moves up a gear, enabling anyone with an opinion to express it, and any budding politicians to make their mark!

4) The Stinger - this table topics session is not for the faint hearted. It is to challenge even the most advanced speaker.

So there will be a challenge for everyone. To help everyone, there will be an impromptu speaking tutorial prior to the 4 table topics sessions, providing hints, tips and tricks of the trade when it comes to impromptu speaking.

And, being the generous folks that they are, Broadgate will present prizes for the best table topic speaker in each category, and then a prize for the best table topic speaker overall. Indeed, wine and champagne have been mentioned but don’t have a go at me if all you get is a Mars bar!

As mentioned, the event is open to members of all clubs and people of all experience levels.

After, there will be a picnic in Hyde Park. Bring you own food and whatever calming drink you may need after your ordeal!

For those who don’t know where Speakers corner is, it is on the north east corner of Hyde Park. The nearest tube is Marble Arch. Keep a look out for the bright yellow Broadgate Speakers banner! A map is below:

Map image

Already, about fifteen people have signed up. It would be great to build the crowd and make this a truly memorable event.

If you are interested in attending please contact their Special Events Organiser, Sarah Green. Her email address is sarah_christi22@hotmail.com.

Toastmasters learn from the biggest youth speaking event in the world

Have you ever wondered what would have happened if you'd starting your toastmasters career when you were just 15 years old?  If only...

20,000 plus Year 10 students across London and Essex have been given the fabulous opportunity to take part in the Jack Petchey "Speak Out" Challenge! organised by SpeakersBank.  Culminating this year in the Gala Grand Final 2008 18 contestants enthralled the audience of 600 people with their extraordinary speaking skills.

Sultan_winner_2008_Speak_Out_Challenge The 2008 winner Sultan Ahmed received a standing ovation after his 3 minute speech.  Combining great humour with a serious message about discrimination he convincingly showed us despite being short he is a giant.

As you might expect members of Toastmasters have been involved with Speak Out Challenge. Working for SpeakersBank Sean Kennedy of London Communicators has project managed the whole endeavour.

Others of us have been MCs and judges at Regional Finals (an extremely hard job!) and a part of enthusiastic audiences.

Iain Duthie, 2007/08 Assistant Division B Governor, attended the 2008 Gala Grand Final.   His first impression? "What struck me most was the exceptionally high standard of the speakers.  The speeches were as diverse as the individuals' backgrounds and some were very powerfully delivered."  Will he be back? "I'll certainly be back for the 2009 Final.  I learned such a lot this year, about techniques for speaking in public and the fact that not all groups of young people want to cause mayhem - they can also be inspiring."

See the contestants in the video clip below from the 2007 Challenge.

And the Wandsworth Borough Final 2007:

But what happens once the grand final is over?   Sean Kennedy would love to see more Toastmasters clubs getting involved with a Youth Leadership Program or finding other ways to help the students continue developing their promise. Could your club forge links with a local school or holding 'junior evenings' where young speakers can perform?  "As we all know the more we speak the better we get.  Toastmasters have a chance to provide more opportunities for these young people, and connect with a future generation of members."

The Jack Petchey Foundation has increased funding of the "Speak Out" Challenge! so it will be extended to 20 cities in the UK from September.  Members of Toastmasters will be very welcome as guests at Regional Finals and Sean would welcome Club Presidents to join the team of judges.  SpeakersBank are developing the www.speakoutchallenge.com site as public speaking resource for young people.  Video tips and other resources from Toastmasters would be greatly appreciated.  Email Sean to offer your support.

And for real treat buy the DVD of the 2008 Gala Grand Final and learn from some truly exceptional performances.

Dick Dixon completes his year as London Toastmasters' Division Governor

Dick_Dixon_at_Riverside_June_2008

It's hard to believe that Dick has already completed his 12 months as our Division Governor.  It seemed a good time to ask him to reflect on his term of office and tell what he will be doing in the coming 12 months.

What have you learned during your year as Div B Gov?  Most importantly that you can take on additional responsibilities and really enjoy it.  I certainly have got a lot from my year as Division Governor.

I've learned not to underestimate anyone.  I found that club members across London are up for a challenge.  When asked people have helped in all sorts of ways.  Being brave and taking on roles for the first time, getting up extra early to attend our new morning clubs, travelling to be judges at other Division contests, taking on long term commitments as club coaches or sponsors...The support has been fantastic.

I've also met a number of very experienced speakers who have decided to join Toastmasters and benefited enormously.  Something else not to underestimate or prejudge - I now always invite the professional speakers I meet to join their local club.

What have you enjoyed most?  I have loved seeing clubs develop.  I can think of one club I visited early on and went to again last month.  I could see how the membership had grown and got more confident.  It was lovely to see the glow and smile on people's faces and to know that the club was more solid and confident overall.  I have also been impressed by the variety of clubs we have.  It give Londoners a choice of clubs - finding one where they can feel comfortable and at home.

I've particularly enjoyed seeing new clubs start.  Having 4 new clubs in London was a surprise - a good one.  It's positive for the founder members. It's also an opportunity for members at all levels of experience in established clubs to come along and share what they have learned so far.

The London wide training workshops have been a very positive experience.  I also very much enjoyed being part of the most well attended Division contests that we have ever had in London. Our company clubs have been very supportive - providing excellent venues and organisation.

What have been your biggest challenges?  The committee of the Polish speaking club Polish your Polish threw down the gauntlet.  I had to evaluate several speeches which got me very focused on body language and vocal variety.  I also had tell them what the speeches had been about.  I was miles out of course - which was part of the fun!

I had another language challenge at the conference in Ireland.   I was asked to  toast to the President of Ireland in Gaelic.  Luckily Joe Gibbs was on hand to give me some coaching.  Did it go down well?  Well I got laughter...I've booked for the next conference so I'm hoping to get more practice so I do better next time (if I get asked again).

What would you like to see happening in Division B in 2008/09? I would love to see a handful of new clubs in London. I suspect that one or two of the biggest clubs are ready to start a new one.

It would be wonderful to see even more people gaining advanced communication and leadership awards after they’ve completed their CC.

I would also hope that more of our advanced speakers will take up the challenge of getting involved outside their own clubs. Running workshops, helping with Club Officer Training etc. It’s good to share the opportunities that can be created in our unique Division.

What advice would you give to other Toastmasters in London?  Make the most of the opportunities that having so many clubs close together gives you.  Say "Yes" when challenges and opportunities come along.

Attend the Division Contests and London wide workshops. Go to the biannual conferences if you can.  The next ones are coming up in Ireland and Oxford (details on The London Speaker also on www.d71.org).  You'll see the bigger picture of what Toastmasters International is achieving.  Plus you'll learn a lot from meeting other Toastmasters, from the workshops and from the quality of UK & Ireland contest finals.

What are your personal goals for the coming year? To complete my High Performance Leadership Project and gain my Advanced Leader Silver award.

To work with others helping new clubs get established.  I am currently involved as a sponsor of the new Careerbuilders club and getting a real buzz out of it.

To support Freddie Daniells, the new Division B Governor and his team.  I know they will do a great job.

Thank you Dick!  We've certainly enjoyed having you as our Division Governor and look forward to seeing you achieving your goals over the next 12 months.

Toastmasters Educational Awards June 2008

image

Great news - 39 more educational awards were achieved by members of London Toastmasters (Division B) in June 2008.

It's good see that 11 more people completed their Old Competent Leader just sneaking in before the final deadline of 30 June 2008. We look forward to seeing everyone who has completed the OCL making progress with the Advance Leader Silver in the coming year.   4 people completed the new Competent Leader this month and I'm sure we will see many more being earned in the coming months.

If you have completed an award that is not listed please check that it has been submitted by your club.  Any queries - follow up with Toastmasters International.

Congratulations to everyone who completed a Communication or Leadership award in June.  Toastmasters in London (Division B) achieved even more awards this year than in the previous 12 months.  We'll give you the final tally when the numbers are confirmed by Toastmasters International.  What is clear is that the clubs in London are thriving. A new pre-charter Company Club - Careerbuilder

careerbuilder logo

Just in from Dick Dixon, our Immediate Past Division Governor:

Today we welcome a new pre-charter club to the fold. Within just three weeks of making enquiries about Toastmasters, the founder President of CareerBuilder Speakers, Anna-Marie Headley, has now registered as a Pre-Chartered club in London Division B.

They gave their demonstration meeting on Friday 13 June and their first normal meeting on June 27th. They will be meeting on July 11th and 25th with further meetings planned for second and fourth Fridays in every month.

Meetings are to be held at their London Office near Monument Tube Station, arriving 07.45hrs starting at 08.00 to 09.00hrs. Although they don’t sound it, in my experience, morning meetings are great fun.

They meet at:

Careerbuilder.co.uk, 6-8 Eastcheap, London EC3M 1AE

They are next door to the Tesco on Eastcheap and Monument station is just 2 minutes walk away.

Like all good Toastmaster and their clubs they will need support. As such your time, skill and experience would be most appreciated at these Friday morning meetings. If you can attend or help in any role, please contact the President Anna-Marie Headley on 0207 855 0658. Alternatively let Dorothea Stuart or Dick Dixon, the club’s sponsors, know that you can help.
