Club Officer Training starts today. Learn, share, network!

Twice a year your London Toastmasters council runs evenings of (2 hour) club officer training to: share ideas, improve our knowledge of toastmasters and help us to make the most of the leadership opportunities which committee membership offers.  If you are currently on your club committee (including of a pre-charter club) or you are thinking of joining the committee we would love to see you at one of the sessions.  What do you need to do? Tell your club President/Area Governor that you want to be added to the guest list for one the dates below and come along!

There are three training sessions starting tonight.  The training starts promptly at 6.30pm and ends at 8.30pm.

Tues 7 February at Ernst & Young, 1 More London Place, SE1 2AF (close  to London Bridge station)

Wed 15 February at State Street, 20 Churchill Place, Canary Wharf,  E14 5HJ

If you are a ‘Pre-Chartered’ club, I encourage you to attend , as there is a lot of really useful information which is applicable to you now and when you are Chartered.

The Future of London Division B Toastmasters - give us your views

Londoners have enjoyed a tremendous expansion of Toastmasters in the capital over the last decade, but it is now time to examine how we sustain this growth for the next stage in our evolution.

To facilitate this process, a London Division B Alignment Committee has been established (composed of past & present leaders) to make suitable recommendations for how best to proceed. Further details regarding the proposed timetable and objectives for Alignment can be found in the following information leaflet:

However, we need your input into this process to ensure that all views and opinions are considered. We are providing the following methods to collect your feedback by Friday 24th February:

1. Respond to the short online survey available at: http://svy.mk/DivBAlignment (preferred option)

2. Hold discussions with your club committees, or at club meetings. Your officers will have an opportunity to bring these collective views to interactive sessions being held during Club Officer Training on the 7th, 15th and 20th February.

3. Contact the Alignment Committee directly, by emailing us at feedback@london-toastmasters.co.uk

Our intention is to compile your collective feedback, and supplement this with the necessary statistical information to support any future decision. The option(s) recommended by the London Division B Alignment Committee will publicised in a second round of consultation immediately they are produced. Their final proposal will then be submitted to the London Division B Council and UK & Ireland District 71 for approval.

Purley Speakers - help us charter!

Purley Speakers started in May 2011 and is close to chartering. We have currently 16 members and are looking for six more. Our mission is to "Providing a sincere, authentic, supportive and encouraging environment for confident and eloquent communication and leadership that recognises and values the diverse needs and progress of its members". Our uniqueness is "efficiency". This means we have five to six speakers at most meetings and we always finish on time.

Purley Speakers meet every 2nd and 4th Wednesday at the Jolly Farmers Pub in Purley from 7.30pm until 9.30pm. The pub is only one minute walking distance from Purley Station. More info on www.PurleySpeakers.com

New Club for Russian Speakers

Monday 23^rd January 2012 saw the first meeting of people interested in starting a Toastmasters club in London for speakers of Russian.

The next meeting will be a Demonstration meeting, on Monday 13 February (contact David Marks if you would like to attend Click here to email or call 07768 720 417).

The club, with a working title “Russian English Speakers Toastmasters”, is the brain child of Anastasia Shcherbakova (ACCA Breakfast Club) and David Marks (Early Bird Speakers & Covent Garden Speakers).  Anastasia, from Moscow, is working for KPMG in Canary Wharf, where the club will meet every 1^st, 3^rd and 5^th Monday at 18:45.

All of the interested parties are keen that they can develop their skills in English as well as Russian, and that non Russian speaking visitors will be well integrated into the meetings.  So far the club idea has attracted a good mix of Russian expats and non-Russians, including an Englishman who started doing business with the USSR in 1975.

The club’s leadership team is headed by David Marks, a Russian Graduate who lived in Moscow for three years.  The Club Officer roles are under consideration, and a number of members will attend Club Officer Training.  Area 31 Governor Greg Ros is providing close support, and Sponsoring Clubs and Mentors are being sought.

The target date for Chartering is Q3 2012.

The the first regular meeting will  be on 27 February (after the demonstration meeting on 13 Feb).  The club intends to make full use of the District web site (D71.org), and visitors are welcome to book in to meetings there. 

Everyone, especially Russian speakers, is welcome to visit, to support and to join this new club.

Brentwood Speakers Club meets every second and fourth Tuesday of Each month - 7pm for a prompt 7.30pm start.

There are so many opportunities and requirements for us speak in public whether at work, play or helping a party along! Hone your Judging Skills at our workshop on 30 January

On Monday 30th January please join us for what (I believe!) is the first London Division B Judging Workshop led by past UK & Ireland District Governor Teresa Dukes.

Our aim is to have at least 1-2 members from every club in London to attend so that we can achieve consistent and high-quality judging at all our contests, particularly our International Speech Contests and Evaluation Contests which we'll be holding in a few weeks time.

Our contests are a great opportunity for members to step out of their comfort zones and to practice their public speaking skills in a different and exciting context. To be fair to our contestants and to make sure the best performance wins it is therefore important that judges are unbiased and objective in their assessment. The interactive workshop will focus on explaining how to overcome unconscious biases and provide tips and tricks on how to go about observing the speakers, using the judging forms and assessing the participants against the judging criteria. Judging is a key part of making your upcoming contests a success so please make sure that your club sends at least 1 delegate.

We are fortunate that the workshop will be delivered by Teresa Dukes, and promises to be educational and entertaining, and held at :
