Following on from Dorothea's recent mention of the old Competent Leader (CL) award, it is worth reminding everyone that it is dying on June 30th. After that, the only route to the CL award will be through the 20 or so projects required by the new manual. It is therefore important that everyone thinks about whether they qualify for the old CL and whether they want to get it.
So, who qualifies?
Anyone who has completed the following:
- Has served at least 6 months* on the committee of their club at any stage in any of the following roles:
- President
- Vice President Education
- Vice President Membership
- Vice President Public Relations
- Secretary
- Treasurer
- Sergeant at Arms
- Anyone who has participated in the preparation of a Club Success Plan. As all the London clubs are active participants in the Distinguished Club Plan (DCP) this is not an issue. Essentially this is about being part of the planning process for DCP.
- Someone who has completed the Competent Communicator or Competent Toastmaster awards by the date of application.
- Anyone who has gone to a Club Officer Training session while serving on the committee in the role above.
- Anyone who has conducted any two workshop speeches from the Leadership Excellence Series or the Successful Club series. Details of these workshops are available on the Links and Resources page here on TLS.
Applications for the Old Competent Leader award need to be made by fax or post and need to be received by June 30th. The necessary form and address are on the Links and Resources page here on The London Speaker.
And that's it!
At our most recent District training we were told that 1,300 out of the 4,500 Toastmaster members in the UK can qualify for the Old Competent Leader. That likely means that most clubs in London have members who could get this award and may not know about it. Think about whether you qualify and if you want to go for it? And if so, ask your VPE or Club President about it asap.
PS. (* You must have served as an officer from July 1 through December 31 or January 1 through June 30 to fulfil this requirement. Other six-month periods do not qualify. The six months must be completed at the time you submit this application.)
PPS I completed mine this last week - yay!
