Division L’s Champion Conference was held last Saturday 5 October 2013 kindly hosted at Cass Business School by Cass Toastmasters. Over 119 people attended and the event comprised of 4 Champions giving us their personal inspirational insights on public speaking, along with the finals of the Humorous Speech and Table Topics competition.
Ash Sethi, Division L Governor opened the event, talked about his inspiration for holding a “Champions Conference” and invited the first Champion up. Malachi Talabi, UK & Ireland International Speech Champion 2011 ran a highly interactive humour workshop on the 5 Laws of Laughter. He brought audience members up on stage to “test out their material” and after his session, the laughter continued when he had actually left the mic on when he left the stage!
next Champion was Simon Bucknall
an engaging workshop on exactly that - how do get audience engagement
when you’re on stage. Simon, who TWICE won
the UK & Ireland
Internalational Speech Contest, drew on the lessons he learnt since then from working with high profile leaders, corporates and universities. This was also very interactive with the audiences breaking out into groups and some coming up on stage to demonstrate the material, with its own hilarious moments as well!
Just before the break, we had another Champion, Jim Lawless, who is the first Britain to break the 100 meters barrier in one breath. Jim is a world inspirational public speaker and told us about his 10 winning ways to tame the “tiger” within which had also enabled him to learn to be a jockey in a year for a £1 bet. He did both of these challenges to prove his theories. Throughout his speech he stopped at points to demonstrate what he had done for high presentational impact and tips that the audience should use in their own speeches. A wonderful performance.
After lunch the finals of the Humorous speech and Tables Topics were held and the contestants for the Humorous Speech were Ayse Lowe, David Jones, James Steven, Gill Ornstein and the Table Topics were Samir Malak, Glen Long, Dorothea Stuart, Donna Hicks and Gill Ornstein. We also were treated to yet another Champion of Public Speaking, William Dempster who won earlier this year, 2013, telling us about his journey to the World Finals. By the end of his slot, William had everyone laughing, clapping and singing loudly!
After the awards were announced, Jean Gamester, Lieutenant Governor Marketing from the District Leadership Team said a few words about the successes of the District and Division before Ash Sethi formally closed the event.
Ash said after the event “It is a privilege being Division L Governor, but also as a Cass Business School MBA alumni, an honour to have had the Champions Conference held there so a big thank you to Cass Toastmasters and a personal thanks to Lina Diaz for making e venue happen. Without the involvement of Cass Toastmasters, all the contestants, functionaries, support of the Area Governors, Presidents and their teams, Chee-Hoong Wong our photographer, together with the wonderful audience and the Champions themselves - it would not have been that, a Champions Conference and I like to thank everyone for all their support in making this event happen. “
So what next for Division L? Look out for the next event, but in the meantime wishing all the best for the winners, Ayse Lowe (Humorous Speech) and Glen Long (Table Topics) in the District Finals next month! Book your place now: boadicea2013.org.uk
