Just a quick post to day to follow up on the only contest we haven’t written up yet.
Last Tuesday was the Area 34 contest. 45 or more folks crammed into the Rugby Tavern, Holborn Speakers venue. Given the size of the room, it was hot, hot, hot!
It was a great fun evening marshalled in the first half by the wondrous Nazia Soon (in white in the photo above, but not Justin!) She set a new warm up exercise that I had not seen before. We all had to do laughing exercises. Apparently it is all the rage in India! Have to say, it really worked well.
Anyhow, we started off with the Humorous Speech Contest. With 6 contestants, including a first time entry from NZICA Banks Speakers, the quality was excellent. The results were:
1st place Ola Aralepo of Tube Talk
2nd Place Lesley Stephenson of Early Bird Speakers
3rd Riad Hamada of Holborn Speakers
The second half was kicked off by our contest chair, Alan Bywaters of Grosvenor Square. With his usual pizzazz, he got us underway before asking the topic “If only I knew then what I know now…”. Some excellent topics followed and the winners were:
1st Chris Boden of Holborn Speakers
2nd Place Colleen Doyle of Grosvenor Square Speakers
3rd Place John Campbell of City of London Speakers
All the Area contests are now over. :(
Hopefully, though, we will be seeing you tomorrow at the Division final. I have seen all five humorous speeches at some stage of the contest season so far plus four of the five Table Topics winners. I can promise that those who come will have a ball tomorrow night.
The event is now fully booked. However, if you still want to come, email me and I will let you know if anyone drops out.
