The London Toastmasters team of Laura McCracken, Paul Carroll and David Jones won the Public Speaking Olympiad held in London on Saturday 29 May 2010. In second placed the team from SpeakersBank - Chris Billington, Elaine Powell and Michael Ronayne.
Plenty of Toastmasters came along to support including proud club presidents Primrose Musingarimi (London Olympians), Peter van der Sloot (London Athenians) and me (Excalibur Speakers).
Team captain Paul Carroll's thoughts on why Toastmasters won: "We join Toastmasters to practice our speeches. What we don't realise is how much we gain from other activities like impromptu speaking. This is a big help for debate where you need to be able to formulate responses quickly."
"The critical thinking projects in the Competent Leader Manual are also very useful - particularly for Cogers debating. In this style of debate you have to listen carefully to early speakers and analyse what they've said before articulating your considered opinon - again with very little prep time. Because the Olympiad requires the teams to take part in four very different rounds you need all the flexibility that Toastmasters helps you gain."
