London Athenians celebrate 11 years at the top!

I just wanted to pay tribute to all of our club members at Athenians and to our particularly hard-working committee for such a superb job throughout this past year. Thanks to all of their efforts, not only have we enjoyed a highly successful year, we've gained the full 10 DCP points. This means that London Athenians Speakers Club has gained the President's Distinguished Club Award for the last eleven years .

Our year has included some show-stopping events and workshops, nail-biting contests and some really successful theme evenings. Our grand finale is an exciting debating challenge to round off the year. All this in a busy club that runs weekly meetings throughout the year.

I feel extremely proud to have served as President in such a warm and dynamic Toastmasters club. With a strong committee in place for the coming year and some really committed members we are looking forward to repeating the same level of success.

Grosvenor Square Speakers - a success story

At one memorable meeting Grosvenor Square Speakers gained three additional educational awards and maximum points under the Toastmasters International Distinguished Club Programme. Jill Segal completed her Competent Communicators Award, Club President Jacqueline Purcell achieved Advanced Communicator Silver and Pedro Casillas became a Distinguished Toastmaster. 

In June 2010, Jacqueline Purcell, a university lecturer, was voted in as president of London’s longest established Toastmasters public speaking club, Grosvenor Square Speakers (Est.1981).

What does she feel about her year in office? She faced several challenges. First she became the president of an all male committee which required some ‘gender management’ research and a fair bit of diplomatic skill. Second, she adopted a servant leadership style, quite different to previous presidents. She believes the results of using that style speak for themselves.

Berkeley Square Speakers - 10 out of 10!

Berkeley Square Speakers are in the mood for a celebration having achieved a 10 out of 10 in the Distinguished Club Plan for 2010/2011.  I am delighted that the efforts of my committee, in particular VPE Cat Hall, VPPR Richard Gibson, VPM Antony Clavel, and Founder Treasurer Pamela Hull have brought about this success to round off a fantastic year in the history of our club.

We want to encourage all of the clubs in our London Division to declare any last minute awards, especially the CCs and to bring into membership those extra guests.  Let's see how many 10 out of 10s our Division can achieve.  We will be thrilled to hear the news of your achievements.

Berkeley Square Speakers meets on the first, third, and fifth Wednesdays of the month between 7:30am and 8:45am at the Lansdowne Club in Berkeley Square, London W1. We also meet on most second and fourth Thursdays of the month between 12:00pm and 1:00pm at the Concert Artistes' Association in Covent Garden, London WC2. Free workshop: How to Listen Effectively - at London Olympians

Do you want to:  Listen more effectively?  Better understand others?  Build relations with others?

If the answer to these questions is YES then London Olympians Toastmasters Club would like to hear from you.

A basic human need is to understand and be understood. And the best way to understand people is to listen to them. Good listening skills help us to understand another’s point of view and help us make better decisions.

London Olympians is running a free workshop about ‘How to listen effectively’. Delivered in a warm and encouraging environment, with much interaction, the workshop will help people hone this all important life skill.

Toastmaster Guest -Jack Petchey's "Speak Out" Challenge Grand Gala Final

Dear fellow Toastmasters,

First of all a huge "thank you" for your positive and enthusiastic support for the "Speak Out" Gala Grand Final on 8th July. The response has been overwhelming and created a situation we couldn’t have anticipated or dared hope for.

Requests for tickets have more than doubled since last month and continue to come in, from regional judges, significant journalists, charities, local employers, councillors and mayors... people we’d love to see our key speakers perform but who are now on the waiting list.

I hope you will all be there – remember our new venue is The Queen Elizabeth Hall, Southbank, London SE1 8XX. However, if you or any of your group are unable to attend please can I ask you to let our Programme Coordinator Becky Griffiths know ( [email protected] ) and return your tickets if you have the hard copy version. The QEH is very strict about allocations and a missing guest will mean an empty seat, which would be a great pity with a waiting list of around 200.

Thank you very much for your cooperation with this. I hope to see all or most of you at the bar once it's all over - I would hate to drink alone!
