From Simon Cooper, Asst Division B Governor
What a great day at the London Toastmasters Division B mini-conference held at Imperial College last Saturday! Very well worth being there!
Four very interactive morning workshops facilitated by Diana Lowe, Richard Stacey, Ken Asafo-Adjei and Ewan Wong were well attended.
In the afternoon more than 200 toastmasters and friends attended the Humorous Speech and Table Topics contests held in the Auditorium at Imperial College. The winners of the seven London areas competed to represent London Division B at the UK & Ireland District 71 Toastmasters "Flourish" Conference being held in Glasgow 11-13 November 2011.
Nigel Cutts chaired the Humorous Speech contest. The speeches were fascinatingly varied and the winner was Ola Aralepo, whose speech was a stunning display of vocal variety, body language, and humour. Michal Szczecinski was 2nd and Laura McCracken was 3rd.
The Table Topics contest was chaired by Linda White whose question was simple and to the point: “What words do you most like to hear?” We were rewarded with an impressive array of answers. The winner was David Jones. Loreen McKellar was 2nd and George Anstey was 3rd.
Overall, the standard of all speakers was impressively high and continues to rise each year.
Yuki Tokeshi was so inspired by the Spring Odyssey conference in Windsor that he entreated the audience to go to the Flourish conference in Glasgow. Time will tell how many more book after his encouragement! Our winners Ola and David will greatly appreciate your support.
Early Bird Speakers won the prize for the club sending most members to this event - a free DVD of the Windsor conference and a giant tin of chocolates to share among their club members.
Special thanks to Michelle Cheung and her new team at Imperial College Speakers’ Club for generously hosting this event so successfully. We had more than our money’s worth in education and entertainment. And finally thank you to Julie Kertesz for the photo of Ola and David.
