New Organisation for London Toastmasters from 1 July 2012

Since 1980, when Grosvenor Square Speakers was founded, London Toastmasters has expanded to a Division of 43 clubs, 5 pre-charter clubs and a healthy number of leads for new clubs.  Given our growth, at the UK & Ireland business meeting at the conference in Wexford, a new organisation for our clubs was agreed.  From 1 July 2012 we will become thee Divisions within the Greater London Area.

The new organisation will:

• provide us with support for our club and sustainable growth.
• provide additional leadership opportunities. provide a step towards extending our clubs with a wider coverage in London.
• How about a club in every borough? As a starting point!

Berkeley Square Speakers Shakespearathon - Report

Braving ' Tempest, storm and wynde' Berkeley Square Speakers set out to Speakers Corner Hyde Park to celebrate Britain's Great Bard with a Shakespearathon. We were pleased to be joined by guest Toastmasters from other clubs and the curiosity of passers by was clearly aroused by our Shakespearean antics. We were also rewarded with sunshine for our picnic - the muse was clearly smiling upon us!

President Chris Dunn and Past Area Governor David Adams produced the best set of Table Topics with quotations that i have ever heard. This brought delight to the crowd, as did the recitations (many from memory) by the very talented members of our club.

All in all a lovely way to celebrate the end of our club year and our 10 out of 10 in Distiguished Club Plan.

The final feedback was ' Why don't we come to Speakers Corner more often?' ' Why don't we hold a Speaking Event at the park with all London Toastmasters Clubs?' The way is open so let's seize the opportunity my friends!

Speakers' Corner this Saturday for the Shakespearathon (with table topics)

Come one and all to the Berkeley Square Speakers' Shakespearathon on Saturday 16 June 2012 11.30am prompt start

We'll be delighted to see members of other clubs for this special event - so please come along and bring family and friends. 

If it rains ( heaven forbid!) we'll begin speaking in the bandstand, otherwise we'll be on our usual spot at the Marble Arch end of Speakers Corner, Hyde Park - you won't be able to miss us on our stepladder!

Attached below is a copy of 'All the world's a stage' - the idea is that we will Choral Speak this all together with me conducting at the end of the event. Download and print your copy to bring with you please. Here is a way to participate for everyone. There will also be lots of Table Topics!

Early Birds Evening Icebreaker 25 June 2012

BBC Reith Lectures 2012 start 19 June 2012

I was recently lucky enough to go to the recording of the first Reith Lecture for 2012 held at the LSE. The lecturer this year is Niall Ferguson speaking on "The Rule of Law and Its Enemies".  He is not only an excellent speaker but someone who'll make you think!  Read more about the Reith Lectures here http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00729d9.  His lectures start on BBC Radio 4 at 9am on June 19th (repeated on Saturday) and you'll be able to download the podcasts.

The BBC has an archive of past Reith Lectures (recordings and transcripts going back to 1948). These include the 2011 lectures with Aung San Suu Kyi and Eliza Manningham-Buller.

Free Evaluation Workshop 19 June 6.30pm - book your place now!

Evaluations are the corner stone of learning with Toastmasters.

• In this workshop you will learn why evaluations are such an effective method of learning, and how to conduct an effective evaluation.
• You will learn what to look out for, and how to give feedback for maximum effect.

When: 19 June 2012 6.30pm-8.30pm  Where: Fitzrovia Centre, Foley Street, W1W 6ND MAP

The workshop will include two Toastmaster speeches, which you will observe and analyse, working in pairs or groups to pool your observations.

You will then craft your evaluation, and an evaluator will deliver their evaluation, so you will have the opportunity to compare your version.

The evaluations will then be reviewed.

There will be handouts and forms to guide you in your observations.

The whole workshop will be an example of evaluation in action.

The workshop will be conducted by Richard Stacey.
