EPSOM SPEAKERS, Area 53, will be hosting a Topics Workshop at our club meeting on Monday, December 16 2013, at Bourne Hall, Spring St, Epsom, KT17 1UF, close to Ewell West station. 7.30pm for 7.45 start. 

Come out to leafy Surrey to join us as we watch, listen and learn from Paul Carroll (Division B) as he delivers his Topics Workshop, and share a mince pie with us to celebrate our last meeting of 2013.

Top tips for managing nerves in public speaking – Hilary Briggs shares her experience

Hilary horrified everyone at Grosvenor Square Speakers with her terrifying experience of two days to go to present to 2,000 Germans and nothing prepared!  Heart pounding, how to manage her nerves and pull off this challenge gave her pause for thought.

Roll forward to Monday 25 November and Hilary had a lot of top tips about how to deal with our nerves.

It’s natural to be nervous.  We all get nervous.  It’s a physiological response to being afraid.  We adopt a fight or flight reaction.  This has an adverse effect on our ability to speak.  To make ourselves ready for our speech, we need to manage and control our nerves and here are Hilary’s top tips:

Tip 1 – Battle the breathing

New venue for Holborn Speakers

Holborn Speakers club is moving home. From 3 December 2013 onwards, we will be at the Devereux pub. For those of you who have joined us in the past at the George on the Strand, it’s in the alleyway just around the corner. We’ve tested the bar stock, it’s a lovely little pub, and we look forward to welcoming you.

Join us on Tuesday 3 December 6.45pm for our first meeting in our new home.

Women in Public Life - In praise of Toastmasters

On 20 November 2013 at Portcullis House, Westminster, London a Toastmaster who was a member of Grosvenor Square Speakers, Lady Montagu of Beaulieu, was a speaker at the Women in Public Life event. She credits Toastmasters for preparing her for public life!

Her charity is the Countryside Education Trust  www.cet.org.uk.  Jacqueline Purcell (President of GSS in 2010) and Martin Shovel attended the star studded event.

Getting your nerves under control. Workshop on Mon 25 November

We're always hearing about how people are afraid to stand up in front of an audience and speak. Be it at work or in your social life, it can be a daunting experience.

But not for much longer.

This Monday 25 November, our very own Hilary Briggs, DTM and District Lieutenant Governor of Education & Training, will be running a short workshop on how to get those nerves under control and channel them to your advantage.

Come along to Grosvenor Square Speakers, bring a friend, and let's learn how to make those nerves work for us.

Our venue is at The Cumberland Hotel, Gt Cumberland Place, W1H 7DL, round the corner from Marble Arch tube station (see map below). From the hotel foyer, we meet downstairs. Our meeting run from 6.15pm for a 6.30pm start and end at 8.30pm.

Our meeting on 14 November 22013 included Interesting examples on business strategies and strategies used in real life; a great way of mixing business learning with fun in a regular toastmasters session and good networking during the refreshments’ break.
