From Andrew Bennett (Excalibur Advanced Speakers President 2013/14)
We may only meet once a month but Excalibur had a terrific action packed year in 2013/14. We look forward to more from the club with its new committee for 2014/15. Please come and visit us when you can on the 2nd Wednesday of the month.
June/July 2013
Excaliburger and National Champion, David Jones led a Table Topics Workshop.
We celebrated our 15th Anniversary with prosecco and the inauguration of the Distinguished Ladies Series by Kate McNeilly, DTM. Further speeches were given later in the year by lady DTMs in memory of Helen Blanchard, who died in March 2014. She was Toastmasters’ first lady member 40 years ago and first lady International President in 1985.
August
Our first visit to Speakers’ Corner, Hyde Park, where we went beyond the walls of the Fitzrovia Community Centre, Foley Street, W1 to meet the public and share our skills.
September
Our first lunch time Speak Out club at the Concert Artists Association in Covent Garden to provide opportunities for members to give longer speeches and to extend our usual programme.
October/November
Excaliburger members were successful in Humorous Speech and Table Topics contests throughout London.
December
At our winter-themed meeting, we had guests from Imperial College Speakers. We all enjoyed The Story of Hanukkah and Stories of Christmas with mulled wine and mince pies!
January/February 2014
It was decided to have an extra regular meeting to compensate for various contest evenings.
Luanne Kent, District 71 Governor, graced us with her presence when she visited from Ireland and spoke about our Distinguished Ladies Series and matters relating to the whole of the UK and Ireland.
March/April
At one point, in the International Speech and Evaluation Contests, seven Excaliburgers were advancing in Area and Division rounds.
Carol West, DTM, shared her Eulogy Workshop, which was new for most members and very well received.
May
The Wedding Speech Workshop was another opportunity to meet the public and showcase the evaluation and coaching skills of our members.
A second visit was made to Speakers’ Corner, where we are now known as the folks who actually know how to speak!
Excaliburgers participated in Area 45’s Tall Tales Contest and the Team Speech Challenge.
June
Tonight (Wed, 11 June) was my last regular meeting as President at the Fitzrovia Community Centre in the West End.
I began the year with the remit of increasing and varying club activities with the more descriptive name of Excalibur Advanced Speakers, by which we are now known. Thank you to my Committee for their incredible support during the year. Thank you to every member for all that you have achieved this year and I welcome new members who joined our club this year.
I look forward keenly to the Presidency of Cat Kipling and her team. It is with confidence that I firmly believe that the best is yet to come!
