Division L contests and workshops

I am delighted to be able to announce the timings for the Division L Evaluation and International Speech contests hosted this Saturday 28 March 2015.  We will also be hosting four workshops by expert speakers and a panel discussion with members who have started speciality clubs.  Hilary Briggs DTM, our District 91 Governor, will be in attendance.  The agenda for the day is below. You can come for the whole day or for just part of it. If you are attending the contests you must be in your seat before the contest starts.

Please note the Evaluation Contest will be at 11.15am and the International Speech Contest will be at 1.50pm

The venue for the day is Room LT9 (Sainsbury's Building), London Business School, Regent's Park, London NW1 4SA. Entrance on Park Road (near Baker Street underground station).

How much does this extravaganza cost?  Absolutely nothing!  London Business School has allowed us the free use of a room for this purpose and we are extremely grateful to London Business School for the support.

The winners of the two Division L contests will go forward to the District 91 Spring 2015 Tower Conference 9-10 May 2015 at the Grange City Hotel, near Tower Bridge . The winner of the District International Speech Contest will go forward to one of the World Semi-Finals of the International Speech Contest at the International Convention in August in Las Vegas.

From Port Harcourt with Love

On 14 March 2015 Berkeley Square Speakers had the great honour of hosting a Masterclass joined by live video link with Garden City Toastmasters in Port Harcourt, Nigeria. We were privileged to be one of the first TMs clubs to gain the tangible and immediately implementable value of Freddie Daniells' new Elevate your Elevator Pitch session. 

Lynne Cantor gave us the juice on producing evaluations that will allow us to generate new dexterity in content and structure observations, get away from the delivery observation bias and produce the goods at contest time. David Jones closed with valuable table topic contest winning techniques reminding us that the top officers not only get massive experience in theatre but it is that blend of experience AND classroom that produces progress in our lives and helps build our legacy. Thank you  very much Freddie, Lynne and David. 

In what was a thoroughly enjoyable session members of Garden City Toastmasters made valuable interventions from Port Harcourt which further enriched the morning! 

Indeed Ken Essien commented: 

"Thank you for the wonderful opportunity accorded GCTM Club today. Most attendees were furiously scribbling all through the three workshops.  I am not sure they have had anything close to this before, in their two years of existence.  I am positive the experience will help 'raise the bar' this way too."

This event was testimony to the idea that the best stuff in life happens when we go the extra mile. It is with that sentiment that I give a Big Hand to Man of the Match Si Tate for organising the event. Honourable mentions go to Simon Frusher for making the link happen (in the Lansdowne Club at 0710 on a Saturday) assisted by Martin Zema; to Ken Essien who brought in Garden City Toastmasters and to Cat Kipling for her exec producer role, and for taking us through the programme with such eloquence and aplomb. 

It is my belief that sessions like this one, along with the one we held in November 2014 with Swakopmund Toastmasters in Namibia, inspire us here now to leverage our global movement, to forge new connections of value between toastmasters members across continents, accelerate the development of our clubs, and indirectly, our world. 

Step out of your comfort zone with Broadgate Speakers

We all know that feeling; you walk into a room full of people, there’s a banner on the front saying “…...Toastmasters club” and you wonder whether you have gate-crashed a dinner party. Your first step through the door was the first step to getting out of your comfort zone. At Broadgate, we are passionate about inspiring people to develop their full potential, with the help of some positive energy.

Come and join us for a fun and creative, hands-on workshop as we practice Stepping out of our Comfort Zone! The audience will have the opportunity to learn by helping to facilitate the session.

Area 45 Contests Friday 27 March - Covent Garden

Spring is coming and so are the Area 45 international speech & evaluation contests. Club contest 1st and 2nd place winners from Covent Garden Speakers, Early Bird Speakers and Excalibur Speakers are taking to the stage aiming for the distinction of winning the Area 45 trophies.

Club champions will be trying to out-do each other in their quest to reach the next round of the International Speech and Evaluation Contests.  Expect insightful evaluations and inspiring speeches from some of London's best speakers.  Please register below to let us know you're attending.

Area 53 Evaluation and International Speech contests - results!

On Wednesday night, Area 53 held their international speech and evaluation competitions. It was a lively event, with good participation from local clubs.

The competitions were chaired by two of our most experienced members, Amanda Zwarts and June McCullough DTM. The target speaker for the evaluation competition was Nick Jerome from Experience French. He gave a fascinating speech about the long lost heroes of sport, especially those who are buried in Norbiton Cemetery!

The Area 53 international speech contest was won by Doris Sew Hoy of Epsom Speakers.

The Area 53 Evaluation contest by Dan Jacobs, also of Epsom Speakers. Congratulations to both of them.

We wish them luck for the Division B contests which take place on Saturday 18 April at the Freemasons' Hall, Covent Garden.

Area 34 International Speech and Evaluation Contests - results

Area 34 held their contest evening on 19 March at the London Underground offices at St James Park.

The meeting was opened by Area Governor, David Marks, who also chaired the International Speech contest.

The Area council elected Jay Surti to be the Area Director from 1 July 2015. Jay later chaired the Evaluation contest.

Chief Judge was Liz Hobbs of Tube Talk.  Thank you to our mystery speaker Luca di Carlo, of Broadgate Speakers who gave a speech entitled "The Postman" calling us to to action - "Innovation, Determination, the Future".

It was a very enjoyable evening with some excellent speeches and evaluations.  Many thanks to all our contestants, judges and functionaries for helping the evening go so smoothly, especially contest chairs James Del Gatto and Rona Harding, chief judge Monica Liljeroth and mystery speaker David Cheng. 

And a big thank-you to London Business School for providing such an excellent venue for the contest.

Zen and the Art of Sales - workshop at Clerkenwell Speakers

Clerkenwell Speakers are very pleased to host our member Anis Qizilbash's workshop, Zen and the Art of Sales: 7-steps to selling without being pushy, on Wednesday 1 April.
