11July: 4 Toastmasters European District Champions in London

Saturday 11 July 2015 The Toastmasters International Speech Contest comes to London, in a very special way. Eight speeches, two workshops, two steps from the World Championship of Public Speaking in Las Vegas! This is a must-attend event! We will have 4 Toastmasters European District Champions in London - District 91’s International Speech Champion, Jeremy Robinson will be joined by Europe's three other District International Speech Champions: Antonio Meza (District 59), Thomas Rose (District 95) and Jim Gregory (District 71 UK & Ireland).

What will our champions being doing at this event?

For this special event they will:

• deliver their district contest-winning speeches in preparation for the Toastmasters International Speech Contest Semi-Finals at the Toastmasters International Convention in Las Vegas

• deliver the speeches they’ve been practicing, polishing, and perfecting for the World Championship of Public Speaking (which includes the winners of all nine Semi-finals)

And the workshops?

• you'll be treated to a 25 minute evaluation masterclass by UK & Ireland Evaluation Champion, Lynne Cantor. This is tailored specifically to analyse these world championship quality speeches.

• you'll also brush up on your evaluation skills; join into group evaluation and give written feedback to our four speakers on their speeches PLUS one more masterclass workshop still to be announced.

2014-2015, a year in Broadgate Speakers!

A big thank you to everyone who contributed to a fantastic year, firstly to my fellow 2014/2015 team members; John O’Shea, Linda Bouneb, Andrea Waeschenbach, Dudley Flynn, Ana Nunez, Nerea Carrion Sanchis, Patrick Moran, Andrea James (2014).

Many thanks to fellow club Presidents and club officers/members, particularly in Area 58, for the support and camaraderie and of course to the Area 58 Governing team.

Also special thanks to the guests and Toastmaster guests from other clubs who joined and supported us during the year, in particular thank you to Chris Howell for giving up his time to provide team training and mentoring and also to Julie Kertesz for her impactful visit to the club.

Last but not least a massive thank you to all Broadgate members who brought enthusiasm and commitment to the club. There were many personal achievements fulfilled in addition to the educational awards.

"If you ain’t funny, you better get funny!" Workshop

Humour is one of the greatest assets a speaker can have, and most professional speakers will tell you “if you ain’t funny, you better get funny”. But if you ain’t funny, don’t worry, because the ability to make an audience laugh is a learnt skill.

On Friday 26 June, Ian Hawkins and David Jones will present workshops on how to use humour in your public speaking. Ian is a stand-up comedian, author, conference moderator and makes regular appearances on BBC Radio 2, BBC London and LBC. David performs stand-up comedy and runs stand-up comedy courses, and is the five-time UK & Ireland Table Topics champion.

Come and learn from two of London’s most experienced Toastmasters.

After the workshops there will be a comedy show, starring Toastmasters who have been performing stand-up on the London circuit. If you want to perform at the show, a limited number of open spots are available – please contact the organisers in advance for details.

Monday 29 June Paul Carroll’s debating workshop at West London Speakers

Ever thought you’re a regular debater? Your opponent won’t be a fellow Toastmaster in a club debate. Your opponent may be a colleague at work, or friend in the pub. The EU referendum is less than two years away. Get ready with your reasons for/against. Debating matters!

Practice building an argument with Paul Carroll - past winner of the UK & Ireland Table Topics Contest and founding president of 104 London Debaters – the only debating Toastmasters club in the UK.

During the workshop, Paul will:

• Explain the nature and importance of debate
• Invite audience interaction
• Involve groups in developing arguments
• Lead a full-scale debate proposing and opposing a hot topic.

You are welcome to bring friends and partners along.

It should be a lovely afternoon in the park to bid farewell to the last year and hello to the new so spread the word!

This 1-hour workshop focuses on Voice and Body Language for Speakers during which Andrew will -

• Look at gestures - how do we use our body language to enhance our speech and connect with our audience?
• Improve your breath span and posture to help channel your nerves when speaking and nourish your voice.
