On 23 April 2016, Division K held its inaugural full day Workshops and Contests event at The Grange City Hotel, where we celebrated the excellence of our over 500 members in Evaluation and International Speech Contests!!! . . . and the results are in!!!

Our Division K Champions, Andrew Osayemi - International Speech and Ga Lok Chung - Evaluation will go on to compete at the District 91 UK South Londinium Conference!!! This takes place 7-8 May at the Grange City Hotel near Tower Bridge. Grow and Be Strong!

Morning workshops

David Thompson conducting an intimate and interactive exploration of what makes a new club successful and how clubs can plan to be strong and supportive parents of "new cubs" that will grow to be strong clubs in their own right.

Jean Gamester then spun stories of how stories are a powerful tool for making personal connections, introducing positive change, enabling membership growth and new clubs! Imagine what kind of impact your membership story would have on someone who had never heard of Toastmasters before!!! We are extremely grateful to David Thompson and Jean Gamester for facilitating these powerful workshops that made it possible for the entire event to be a reflection of the District 91 UK South Mission:

Interactive Evaluation Workshop at London Victorians 26 April

From London Victorians

London Victorians will be hosting an interactive evaluation workshop next week on 26 April 2016. The workshop will be facilitated by Catherine Casale, a writing coach with over thirty years of experience working with all ages and nationalities. This workshop will explore why we evaluate, some key evaluation concepts, and different forms of speech analysis.  

Following a 45mins educational, two speakers will be evaluated by multiple evaluators experimenting with the different forms of analysis covered earlier. After each evaluation session, audience members will have the opportunity to take part by giving feedback to the evaluators directly.

Area K31 Contests Results + Area Director Election

On Thursday 14 April Area K31 International Speech and Evaluation Contests took place in Canary Wharf to a very good turnout.

Both the 1st and 2nd place winners advance to the Division K Contests.

Area Director Election

Before the contests kicked off, the Area 31 Council held a meeting and the next Area Director for K31 for Toastmaster Year 2016-2017 was elected. The winning candidate was Chris Lloyd-Davison from Canary Wharf Communicators.

Congratulations to the new Area Director who will be taking over from 1 July 2016.

We wish Area K31 Contestants all the best at the Division K Contests taking place this Saturday 23 April 2016.

Division B Contests/Workshops -results and report

A superb afternoon of public speaking started with a song as International Speech Contest chairman Laurent Nicourt, Area 8 Director and member of Sytel Reply Toastmasters)energised the large crowd gathered at Freemasons’ Hall. (Click here for the full lyrics!) We were witness to seven superb speeches, all very different in message but each and every one deeply personal. On stage we had Amanda Zwarts (Epsom Speakers), Atul Patel (Phoenix Speakers), Graeme Bass (Kings Speakers), Ian Hawkins (Early Bird Speakers), Lynne Cantor (Excalibur Speakers), Mark Yansen (London Corinthians) and Sui Chin Mckeand-Han (London Athenians).

The second contest was led by Rose Zhang ( President, London Olympians) as she introduced our target speech by Helena Brewer (District 91 Leadership Team) with a speech on the wrongly maligned Richard III. Our evaluators then each took their turn in analysing the speech. They were Alfred Amodu (London Cardinals), Cat Kipling (Excalibur Speakers), Jakub Pawlowski (Polish Your Polish), Robin Adams (Mole Valley Speakers), Taz Miah (Early Bird Speakers) and Vaughan Evans (London Corinthians).

After a tough contest, Chief Judge, Andy O’Sullivan brought us the results:

Vanessa King, D91 Progam Quality Director, presented Public Relations awards to Epsom Speakers, The Toast Rack, Surbiton Speakers and Early Bird Speakers. Discovery Soapbox picked up an award for officer training. Educational awards were also recognised.  Marc Lottig and George Chiesa received DTM pins and  Jill Segal, Brian Skelton, David Salamons, Shola Kaye received Triple Crowns.

The morning session saw workshops from Richard Fallon and Ola Aralepo as well as a bonus Table Topics workshop from the maestro, Paul Carroll. The Speakfest returned to high acclaim with 9 speakers getting the opportunity to give a speech in the grand halls to new audiences led by David Salamons and David Jones

A huge thanks to all who took part on and off stage.  Best wishes to our Division B contestants as they go on to the District 91 contests which take place at the Spring Londinium Conference being held at the Grange City Hotel near Tower Bridge. Area 34 contests and Area Director election - results

Even a rainy Saturday morning couldn’t keep a great crowd from supporting Area 34 contestants at the International Speech and Evaluation Contests!

Kings Cross Speakers, Holborn Speakers, Clerkenwell Speakers, Tube Talk and Bloomsbury Speakers were all represented but it was Tube Talk which ran away with first place trophies for both contests.

The Division L contests and workshop are on Saturday 16 April 2016.

Morning session: The morning starts at 10:00 with workshops on selecting speech topics and goal-setting for you and your VPE, followed by the Evaluation Contest.  Contestants and functionaries need to arrive by 11:30 for the contest briefings, with the contest starting at 11:45.  

Afternoon session:  The afternoon session will reconvene at 13:35, starting with workshops creating evaluations with value and a focus on HPL: the six dimensions of service leadership.  There will also be updates on the Revitalised Education Programme, District Alignment, the upcoming District Conference 7-8 May, and an update from the District 91 Leadership team.  Oh, and don't forget the International Speech Contest!  This should finish around 17:00.  

Note: All contestants and functionaries need to arrive by 13:15 for the contest briefings.
