Join the D91 Division C Club Growth Committee

Dear London Toastmasters,

I am putting together a club growth committee for central London.  This will be a Division C sponsored initiative, in collaboration with the District 91 Club Growth Director Andy Hammond.  Toastmasters from other Divisions are very welcome to get involved.  The intention is to bring together expertise in London and expand collaboration to develop new London club opportunities.

There are various activities I believe such a committee could do in addition to the great work headed up by Andy.  A few examples below: -

1)         Consider opportunities for corporate clubs in the London area and support them.

2)         Ditto for community clubs in untapped areas of London and its periphery

3)         Put together a pool of potential club sponsors, mentors and coaches

My initial idea is that committee member terms will be around two years in length and January-December, to give continuity across annual changes of officers.  An initial idea might be for the London Divisions to nominate two committee members each, who would then nominate a leader from themselves.  My intention is to set up the committee and then take a back seat when I am able.  However, these are only ideas and all these details are up for negotiation.

The highlight of the Division C conference, held at the prestigious London Business School in Regents Park were the Humorous Speech and Table Topics Contests.

The Humorous Speech Contestants were:

Division L Contests - results!

The Division L contests held on Saturday 15 October 2016 at the London Business School were incredibly popular and well supported. Eventbrite had allocated 91 tickets but there were at least 105 people in the room and every one there was treated to a fantastic afternoon's entertainment. A visitor from District 71 said “ The venue was lovely; the atmosphere was vibrant and the speeches were amazing”

The first contest started  promptly at 14:00 Steve Brewer Division L Director welcomed everyone and introduced Andrew Tollinton the chair for the Humorous Speech Contest who warmed the audience up then cooled them down with the rules and warmed the up again with serious business of having fun. Division L was fortunate to have eight competitors Mopani Mkandawire,Angela Meringolo,Nick Youngman,Irene Bradshaw,Philippa Ellis,Warren Sheng, Jane Harries and Sarah Mannan. All of whom made this contest worth winning.

Lynne Cantor was the Contest Chair for the Table Topics Contest. She maintained the high standard that had been seen and heard in the Humorous Speech contest.There were some very clever answers to the question...If you excluded Cars and the mobile phone, what would you uninvent?

The seven contestants gave us a magnificent array of answers from the serious to the madcap, all of them giving inventive solutions to the problem set. Our contestants were: Daniel Broadhead, Freddie Daniells, Salem Al-Damluji, Jason Thompson, David Phelops, Jeremy Assous  and Angela Lansbury.

Excalibur, that’s just another club isn’t it?  Not quite.  Find out more at our Open Evening Showcase on Wednesday 26 October 2016.

Excalibur Speakers is a “Club of Excellence” for Toastmasters who have already made progress in the speaking and leadership program.

It is the only club in London that is designed to complement a Toastmasters “home club” and membership is open to any Toastmaster who has completed the Competent Communicator manual.

Members get to experience the full range of speaking projects from the advanced manuals, including impromptu speeches, discussions, sales pitches, poetry and “roasts”, as well as the usual prepared speeches.

The slightly different format of our meetings allow us to focus on quality evaluations, stretched table topics and effective introductions for speakers.

Current members between them have won eight District titles, and being a member enables you to tap into the wealth of knowledge and skills of these Champions, Presidents of other clubs, Ambassadors and members who speak both in and outside of Toastmasters.

Excalibur is dedicated to helping its members take on more challenging speaking projects, while receiving high quality evaluations from experienced Toastmasters and Champions.

A very special evening at Harrovian Speakers Club

On 5 October 2016 Harrovian Speakers Club held a very special meeting as they welcomed the Mayor of Harrow Rekha Shah and the chairman of the Harrovian branch of the Parkinson’s charity Raymond Turner. Harrovian member Amparo Villamil, who is the Club’s VPM and who has Parkinson’s, recently completed her first ten speeches from the Competent Communicator Manual. That evening Amparo received the Competent Communicator award from the Mayor of Harrow. The achievement of the CC award is an incredible accomplishment by Amparo, which will certainly inspire other speakers with Parkinson’s in Area 61 to challenge themselves to become great speakers.

The meeting, which was hosted by TME president Jayanthiny Kangatharan, was made extra special by the theme of the evening that was ‘the benefit of giving back’, and by the fact that as a surprise guest Amparo’s mentor Kavita Dulai from Watford Speakers did give a speech to praise Amparo’s achievement before the CC award was presented to her. There is no doubt that this speech was indeed a touching speech generating heartfelt warmth that filled the entire room. After the award presentation, Rekha Shah spoke about how public speaking helped her with her career, while Raymond Turner told attendees about the activities that the charity has planned for this year.

Similar to the Mayor of Harrow and the chairman of the Harrovian branch of the charity, Amparo is a keen supporter of the Parkinson’s charity. This meeting can therefore be considered successful in having raised much-needed awareness of the work done by the charity, the work done by its members like Amparo, and the work done by Rekha Shah and Raymond Turner. This meeting therefore was an excellent occasion to celebrate the achievements of members of our Club, members of the charity, and members of the Harrow community. All in all, it was a beautiful meeting with many touching moments.

Area 5 Contest - Results!

The first ever Area 5 contests took place on 10 October 2016 at the Counting House in Cornhill.

We were treated to four superb humorous speeches: Laurent Nicourt, Rob Knight, Chris Mader and David Salamons battled for our hearts and our laughs.  Laurent and Rob came first and second, respectively.

In the table topics, Emel Salamanca Rolon, Laurent Nicourt, Taz Miah and Sammy Amareh soared up to the sun and looked down at the sea and in the end Emel and Laurent came first and second, respectively.

Laurent and Emel now go on to the Division C finals at London Business School on this coming Saturday, 15 October.  Get there if you can: it promises to be a superb day of contests!

Area 9 contests - results

On Thursday 29 September 2016 the Area L9 Humorous Speech and Table Topics competition took place in The Plough public house. We were treated to an evening filled laughter, and feats of eloquence!

All four competitors in each competition set high standards for themselves and raised the bar for the Area’s clubs.

The Humorous Speech contest was between Irene Bradshaw, Philippa Ellis, Francine Legrand and Mike Thompson. Irene Bradshaw was not a stranger to the contest, having competed the previous year, and took First Place. Philippa was a strong contender placing in Second.

The Table Topics competition was keenly contested by four challengers: Freddie Daniels, Daniel Broadhead, Sara Thomas, and Simon Cooper. First and second place finishers were Freddie and Daniel with their energetic and passionate impromptu speeches.

We are very pleased to see Irene, Philippa, Freddie, and Daniel go through to the Division Contests which are being held at the London Business School on Saturday 15 October.
