It’s a great skill in Toastmasters to knock up a speech in no time and deliver it well. But what would you do when it really counts? A big work presentation, a special event like your best friend's wedding or even a speech contest; how do you prepare for the speeches that matter?
In this workshop Chris will look at the process he went through to take speeches from strange ideas in his head to District finals and ultimately to the World Championships in Malaysia in 2014. What is the difference between a speech that wins a club night ribbon and one that wins a District final? And how can you turn one into the other? In this workshop Chris will look at:
Chris Boden joined Toastmasters in 2007 to overcome his shyness and learn to speak with authority at work. He is a former President of Holborn Speakers and founder member of St Paul’s Speakers. Since 2011 he has made eight District finals, winning two of them (Evaluation 2011, International Speech 2014) and taking a trophy in five others. He is one of a small handful of people to have won a District trophy in all four contest disciplines!
Please note that this is a workshop lasting approx. an hour, followed by a shortened version of our usual club meeting with prepared speeches from our members. We hope that if you join us for the workshop that you stay to support your fellow Toastmasters in the prepared speeches segment of the meeting.

A news series has come on BBC Radio 4 which explores thinking and reasoning about contentious issues in current affairs. Presented by The Economist's Anne McElvoy and featuring conflict-resolution consultant Gabrielle Rifkind, Across The Red Line is for for anyone who needs to communicate. The show examines "the point at which our own certainties come under challenge."
As a charter-member of the UK's only Toastmaster club dedicated to debate, I recommend listening--as the program suggests curious listening--to the exchange and the analysis.
What we practice in a debate club is making the best possible case for the position we're given. The collective effort of the debaters should result in the audience thinking that they have a real choice to make, and not between good and evil.
After all, people you're likely to encounter who are willing to engage you in debate are not going to be evil. They may be wrong, but then it's your place to convince the audience (jury, customers, market participants, citizens) of that. We don't simply contradict each other! We highlight our common ground so that we're engaging each other rather than talking past each other.
This is fruitful in the world outside the debating club. What you'll find when you examine an issue where you disagree with another is that you have some common ground. For example, you agree that "X" is an issue, that there's a problem connected to it and that there are different ways of solving the problem. For instance "X" can be a foreign policy towards N. Korea, education funding or whether single people should be allowed to adopt children. You don't even have to say that your opponent's solution is the worst thing in the universe. You do need to show that your solution is better, whether that's faster, cheaper, fairer, helps more people, harms fewer people, or some combination of these.
McElvoy, a veteran of many public debates admits that "We panelists can end up being more interested in chasing applause or getting a point over on the opposition than we are in exploring the trickiest parts of a subject."
When you're watching a good debate you should see competing truths and then you've go to decide which is more important. As PBS's Fred Friendly once said of public broadcasting, and this applies to debate, "We're not here to make up anybody's mind but to make the agony of decision making so intense that you can escape only by thinking."

Report from Toastmasters Division L by Cat Kipling
Toastmasters gathered from Division L and beyond to network, learn and become better leaders at January’s Division L Toastmasters Leadership Institute organised at London Business School
We enjoyed a full day of packed and varied agenda led by past District Directors, past District contest champion, current District leaders and more.
Past District Evaluation Contest champion Lynne Cantor opened the day energetically with her workshop on Becoming a CHAMPION Evaluator, inspiring everyone to participate in the upcoming evaluation contests and giving us top tips to take back to our clubs.
Cat Kipling, Area L9 Director, asked attendees what one thing they would do in the next 6 months to make their own club better, and encouraged everyone to ask their members and guests for feedback via a Moments of Truth session - and to act on that feedback!
“What is Speechcraft” was the next order of the day, delivered by Division L Director Seema Menon, where we learned what an approachable tool this programme is to introduce a broader audience to Toastmasters and to have a real impact in our local communities.
With a keynote speech, past District Director Jean Gamester inspired us to be better leaders. By practicing what she preached, she shared stories from her own experience - both within and outside of Toastmasters - throughout her speech to bring the subject to life.
Immediate Past District Director Vanessa King ran a highly interactive session on mentoring - both why you should be a mentor and why you should have a mentor - examining how a mentoring relationship works and what the benefits are to both parties.
Coralie Frances, Pathways Ambassador, and Fedor Herbatschek, Pathways Guide, shared an introduction to Pathways, the new Toastmasters educational programme, in an interactive session drawing on the key features and benefits. Keep an eye out for a Pathways Guide presenting at your club soon!
Helping us with answers to the “why” and “how to” complete a High Performance Leadership project, Immediate Past Division L Director Steve Brewer shared his experiences of completing his own HPL project and also helping others with their projects.
Our day was rounded out by a thought-provoking session on Conflict Management from Mindy Jhittay, Immediate Past President of Early Bird Speakers, in which we learned techniques that we can apply not only at Toastmasters but in our home and work environments too.

Should the railways be nationalised? Opinion polls have shown strong support for this idea.
Critics accuse private firms of ratcheting up train fares and profiting from commuters.Business competition between railway companies is different to many sectors. As a customer, you generally have little choice which train service you use.
Would the state run the railways better? Or would we just exchange high user-fees for higher taxes for all?

Have you ever wondered what it would take to write a speech that is truly inspiring? Have you ever wondered whether you could write one yourself? And have you ever thought whether you could take that speech all the way to the finals of the World Championship of Public Speaking?
Using speeches from past World Champions, our speaker, Freddie Daniells, is going to share his perspective on the key ingredients that will help you to write a compelling inspirational speech that you could use to enter the International Speech contest in March. The workshop will help you understand both the structure and type of content that does well in the International Speech contest. Even if you are not planning to enter the contest, he will provide good foundational lessons for speakers of all levels.
Our speaker, Freddie Daniells, has attended 4 World Championships in person, was a judge in the 2013 finals, has provided advice to a number of recent District Champions, and has attended many workshops by World Champions. He is also a professional speaking coach and 2012-13 District Governor for Great Britain and Ireland.
