From Chris Boden
I remember attending a workshop at my first District conference where Eric Fitzpatrick, who placed second in the District International Speech Contest gave tips on how to prepare a winning speech. I’d only been at Toastmasters a few months. I still have the notes tucked away in my Toastmasters file and I still use some of the things he taught. Six years later Eric was the contest chair who handed me the winner’s trophy in Dun Laoghaire when I won that contest. I’d used his tips and numerous others that I learnt at the many District Conferences I went to.
This time around I’m part of the May conference organising committee and looking forward to meeting both new and old Toastmasters and seeing what we can all learn this time. That’s the main reason I’ve been to more than ten of them - the workshops and the keynote addresses, I always feel like I’ve come away with something of value for my journey.
And of course there are the contests. If you want to be the best, I’ve always thought you need to see the best in action. And that’s just what you’ll get with the finals of the International Speech and Evaluation contests. It’s a chance to see first hand the best in our District in action. Watch two new champions be crowned and see who will go on to represent our District in Chicago at the world championships.
Ever wondered what it takes to run an organisation that spans 141 countries with over 350,000 members? Dan Rex knows. As the CEO of Toastmasters International, he has overseen the expansion and growth of our organisation for years and is coming to our conference to deliver two keynote addresses, one each day, to share his knowledge and experience with us.
District Conferences used to come twice a year, but now with the cessation of the Autumn conferences this is the only one. So book your place in Bracknell at the Coppid Beech conference on the 5-6th May. It’s just a short ride out of London into the nearby home counties.
The Coppid Beech is a unique venue, looking more like an alpine chalet than a country hotel. With a dry ski slope and ice skating rink next door it gives you a chance to indulge some of your Winter Olympics inspiration without needing to go all the way to South Korea! Hope to see you there.
