Many students believe the concept of "safe spaces" fosters inclusion, increases sensitivity and sets up parameters in which difficult conversations can occur and marginalized voices can be heard, according to The Washington Post. But critics argue that creating safe spaces serves only to stifle free speech, coddle students and ignore both history and the reality found off campus.

Amazing Area K3 Humorous Speech & Table Topics Contests - The Results!

Thanks for all participants for Area K3 Humorous Speech & Table Topic contests! It's a wonderful night and we saw five humorous speeches and five impromptu speeches from the winners of clubs in Area K3 on Wed, 26th Sep 2018.

All Contestants had done their best and brought inspiring and enjoyable performance on the stage. Judges, functionary roles and host were supportive. Also, the attendance rate is incredibly high. 46 people joined us for the contest evening. We're happy to see so many Toastmasters come together to support the Area level contests and the contestants from their home clubs, and network with TMs from other clubs. You can see what make Toastmasters in Area K3 -Support, friendship, fun, and great speeches! 

The next rounds of the contests are at the Division K Autumn Conference on 24 November.

Can The Market Solve Housing? Debate with us 13 Nov

On Tuesday, 13 November, 104 London Debaters will host a panel debate (think BBC's Question Time) chaired by charter-member Joann Walsh. The panelists, representing different viewpoints and constituencies, will discuss the efficacy (or otherwise) of the market for housing. The event will be interactive.

The 'housing crisis' is basically a housing affordability crisis, claims the Adam Smith Institute. It manifests itself in the form of extraordinary housing prices and rents after three decades of nearly uninterrupted price increases. A much larger part of our income is now being spent on housing than in past decades.

Whereas The Guardian contends that the root cause lies in the socio-economic transformations of the new economy. This new tech-induced, internet-empowered era implies an increasingly dynamic economy centred around R&D, marketing, and finance. 

The housing crisis is leading to evictions, re-possessions—42,000 nationally last year—and homelessness, reports the World Socialist website, while London councils threaten to remove tenants to low-cost housing hundreds of miles away. The housing shortage is creating a social catastrophe. The explosion in private renting results in overcrowding and dreadful conditions, and is a boon for exploitative landlords.
